Since then I have received multiple phone calls from friends and family telling me to be safe and to take proper precautions.

I sent one of those “be careful” messages to my ex back there today and I hope it didn’t make her feel the way they seemed to make you feel. You’re absolutely right that it’s not something you or any other girl should live in fear of, or dress differently, or act differently because of. Still though, when someone says “drive safe,” you probably wouldn’t reply by saying that it’s not your fault if some drunk driver crashes into you.
No matter the level of caution we live with, we are all ultimately at the mercy of one another. I can’t say anything to potential perpetrators I’ll never meet, but I can tell all of my friends to be safe, and to drive safe, and to live well and enjoy themselves, and that I’ll always have their backs.
